Summary
Any gamer knowsbossesare often an essential aspect of the medium. Facing off against these foes can be one of the most stressful aspects of a video game. However,in certain cases, there are bosses who can become playable.Part of this depends upon the genre of the game. Certain subsets, such as fighting games or theLEGOaction adventure gamesplay in such a way that a boss can be easier to translate.
However, other times this can be a relative rarity, with many bosses often beingtoo big (like Ridley), too powerful, or generally just too much to justify playing in their fullest scope. Regardless, some games relish the opportunity to let players give the bigger enemies (literally or metaphorically) a spin.

Aliens have been a major part of theMetal Slugseries since the second game. These aliens are primarily the Mars People, who often work with the Rebel Army, or otherwise trick them into an alliance. Their leader,Rootmars, is the final boss ofMetal Slug 3.Considering most playable characters inMetal Sluggames are significantly smaller, the thought of controlling that gigantic alien seems ridiculously implausible.

InMetal Slug 6, a new three-way alliance between the Regular, Rebel, and Martian Armies is formed to take on the Invaders, a group of aliens who act as predators to the Mars People. This is a result of Rootmars being too injured to lead the Mars People, giving the Invaders an opening to attack.
However, it recovers in time to appear on an alternate route for the game’s fourth mission. If the proper path is taken, an armored Rootmars with vulcans (super vehicle guns) attached to its appendages will appear as the “Rootmars Slug.” This invincible SV can shoot down the various aerial units in the invaders' ranks. Unfortunately, while Rootmars is invincible in this state, their riders are not, and they need to be moved around by Rootmars to avoid being damaged. Rootmars can even later resurface to save the player on the final mission.

Rootmars in either form, as well as the Invader King (the final boss ofMetal Slug 6) are all playable in the recently released Tower Defense Game,Metal Slug Attack: Reloaded.

The antagonisticOrganization XIIIserve as overarching enemies for most of theKingdom Heartsseries. Their initial leader, Xemnas, serves as the final boss inKingdom Hearts 2as well as a recurring boss present in many other installments. He finally becomes a playable character in the DS-exclusive358/2 Days, specifically during Mission Mode. He is one of many, with the other members of Oeganization XIII being playable from the start as well, including Marluxia, the final boss on Sora’s route inChain of Memories.
The other 11 proper members of the XII also serve as bosses across variousKingdom Heartsgames. Riku, another recurring boss in earlier games, is unlockable in Mission Mode. Xion, the proper final boss of358/2 Days, is also unlockable, albeit without the various forms she had displayed during that stage.
Oftentimes, a “playable” version of a final boss, is weaker than the version players may encounter acting as a CPU. Akuma, from theStreet Fighterseries, is another common example of this phenomenon.

Although fighting games commonly have playable boss characters, there are a certain subset of fighting game bosses that, more often than not, tend to be overlooked. The gigantic foes of fighting games are often neglected in contrast to their more conventionally sized counterparts.Marvel vs Capcomhad a history of this as well, with both Onslaught and Abyss, the final bosses from the previous games, being unplayable in any capacity. InMarvel vs Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds, the trend continued, withGalactusonce again being unplayable.
Very few games feature this gigantic villain as playable in such a large capacity, and even games such asLEGO Marvel Superheroessignificantly shrink him down when he becomes playable. However,Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3added Galactus Mode as an unlockable feature. Here, the planet eater was playable in his full glory, facing off against a variety of the game’s standard fighters.
The infamous white hand has been a constant foe since the very first installment of theSuper Smash Bros.series. Another gigantic foe,Master Handis commonly unplayable without hacking the game. While a powerful opponent, he has been at times enslaved by foes in otherSuperSmash Bros.games with lore, such as Tabuu inBrawl’s Subspace Emissary and Galeem inUltimate’s World of Light.
In World of Light, after being freed from Galeem’s control, Master Hand temporarily becomes playable for the first time, and without hacking. Master Hand takes on 50 false fighters and aids the player conquer both light and darkness. It is a testament to the staying power of theSuper Smash Brosseries that this longtime foe feels so fulfilling to play as.
