With the recent Discovery acquisition of Warner Bros. and the unexpected cancelation of the movie version ofBatgirl, fans have been worried about the fates of the other DC properties still in production for the company. Fortunately, it appears theBlue Beetlefilm is safe from the Warner Bros. chopping block.
In an upside-down entertainment world where a finished film starring Michael Keaton as the OG big-budget movie version of Batman could just be turned off like a light, it’s not without reason for fans to be concerned. However, as plans forWarner Bros.' DC film slate change, not all projects are being outright cancelled.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, insiders sayBlue Beetleis still moving forward with its August 2023 release date. However, development on other DC projects is slowing down. As of now, the future plans forSupergirl, a Green Lantern Corps movie, and the planned film fora Black Supermanwritten by Ta-Nehisi Coates are all in limbo. Before the acquisition, Warner Bros. had developed a plan to release three to four movies a year under the DC label. This plan was conceived by Walter Hamada after Zack Snyder’s take on their franchise failed to materialize the type of big, flashy MCU-style universe they had hoped for, with the wholeJustice Leaguefiasco only leading to multiple cuts (Joss Whedon’s and later Snyder’s) that were still an utter disaster. It was a plan that wasn’t going to yield a DC-version of Disney’s success but allowed for interesting, more auteur-driven films likeShazam!or James Gunn’sThe Suicide Squad(and subsequent smash TV seriesPeacemaker).
Zaslav, however, disagreed with the plan, saying, “We’ve done a reset. We are going to focus on quality. We are not going to release any film before it’s ready. DC is something we can make better.” The remarks were not well received at DC themselves, with insiders saying members of the film division were “pissed.” Some individuals who are working on DC projects have received assurances their projects are not in trouble, andGunn recently confirmedPeacemakeris safe.
In a recent earnings call, Zaslav indicated thatBlack Adam, theAquamansequel, andThe Flashwere still slated to be released, despiteEzra Miller’s less-than-stellar reputationright now. The troubled actor is on their third arrest of the year with the recently reported home invasion in Vermont.
Blue Beetleis scheduled to release in theaters on July 23, 2025.
