Treyarch’s newest addition to theBlack Opsseries,Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, releases in a week, and fans can do nothing but wait as the anticipation for a new zombies mode, an innovative multiplayer experience, andCall of Duty’s first everbattle royale mode, Blackout, continues to grow. Now, fans may have one more thing to look forward to, as Treyarch has revealed that mod support forCall of Duty: Black Ops 4is being considered.

Recently, in a series of fan questions on Twitter, one fan asked Treyarch how the ‘mod tools’ would look forCall of Duty: Black Ops 4. Treyarch quickly responded saying, “We’ve repeatedly commented on our huge fandom for the mod community, and it’s something we’ll be looking at, but won’t be at launch.” This is enormous news for both fans ofCall of Dutyand fans of mods, and having added mod support forCall of Duty: Black Ops 3, Treyarch has the expertise to smoothly usher mods intoCall of Duty: Black Ops 4, assuming it chooses to do so.

Compared to the game’s overall mixed-reviews,Call of Duty: Black Ops 3’s mods were relatively well-received. Many of the most popular mods included guns and/or maps from previousCall of Dutygames such asModern Warfare 2andBlack Ops 2. Though players were lucky enough to seeMinecraft,Halo, andThe Walking Deadmods as well. Although Treyarch by no means confirmed mod support forBlack Ops 4, it is encouraging to know that it is a real possibility, and even more encouraging to know thatBlack Ops 4would be the perfect game for it.

While many fans view Treyarch’s response as a basis for potential zombies mods, it will be interesting to see if players will have the ability to mod elements of Blackout. Although Blackout is an online multiplayer experience, the possible introduction ofpost-launch custom gamescould enable modders to configure the battle royale mode to their liking. Seeing the creativity of fans come alive in a battle royale setting would truly be an amazing spectacle to see and experience.

Although Treyarch did not confirm thatCall of Duty: Black Ops 4would have mod support, considering thatBlack Ops 3’s modding was relatively successful, it is highly likely that it will be added. While many players will be hooked on Blackout at launch, fan-made mods will be something to look forward to as the hype aroundBlack Ops 4slowly declines. Fan-made mods such asMagneto inGrand Theft Auto VandSpider-Man inGrand Theft Auto: San Andreashave been making headlines and piquing players' interest as of late. Hopefully these incredible mods will inspire the creation of even more mods, while also convincing Treyarch to add mod support inBlack Ops 4. Either way, fans will be forced to wait even longer as Treyarch stated that if it adds modding, it would be post-launch.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4releases on July 27, 2025, for PS4, Xbox One, and PC.
