Summary
Community reception toCall of Duty: Modern Warfare 3has been all over the place, and understandably so. On one hand, the Carry Forward system seems like a great way to rewardModern Warfare 2fans while filling the next game with content, but some are worried it will mean less new Operators and weapons in the sequel. The campaign’sOpen Combat Missions sound dangerously similar to Spec Ops, while Zombies’ open world map could be an ambitious success or feel like a boring wasteland. Multiplayer has led to what is perhaps the most mixed response of all thanks to its map lineup.
While the rumored returns of Ninja and a traditional mini map were met with excitement, fans were split when it was revealed that the launch map roster would be filled completely with remakes. Nostalgic gamers are thrilled by the prospect of these remasters, as the OGCall of Duty: Modern Warfare 2map lineup was beloved. Newer players are less enthused, arguing thatModern Warfare 3sounds more like anMW2DLC than a premium release since it is full of old content. Regardless of where players fall, one question remains, as fans are wondering what will happen with the originalModern Warfare 2’s DLC maps.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2’s DLC Maps Remain Unconfirmed For MW3
Thus far, gamers know that all 16 of the originalCall of Duty: Modern Warfare 2’s launch maps will be remade forMW3. This means that players will soon beflanking around the main building in Estateand battling around an airplane in Terminal once again. However, with 16 maps being a solid enough launch lineup, it seems like Sledgehammer Games has stopped with the base game maps, leaving fans ofMW2’s DLC arenas concerned.
Admittedly, the most iconicmaps fromCall of Duty: Modern Warfare 2were found in the launch lineup, as the very nature of DLC maps meant that they failed to reach the entire player base. However, that does not mean that the maps were bad. InModern Warfare 2’s DLC packs, players visited a trailer park, oil refinery, junkyard, and apartment complex. A Carnival map was also featured, joining the Trailer Park as a standout from the game’s DLC offerings.
Unfortunately, by leaving these maps out ofCall of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, they remain trapped in a game that is well over a decade old. While players can still hop back into the originalModern Warfare 2, withMW2’s servers recently being improved, not everyone is willing to dig out an old console to play a game that is outdated from a visual standpoint. Remakes could have brought Carnival and Trailer Park to an entirely new audience, and including them in a launch lineup could have given them the spotlight they never had.
While one obvious solution to this problem is to include the map remakes inCall of Duty: Modern Warfare 3’s post-launch seasons,Sledgehammer Gamesalready has that content planned out.MW3will be taking a backwards approach to map releases, with map remakes completely dominating the launch lineup and the seasons providing original locations instead. With 12 brand-new maps planned as seasonal content, there may not be enough time and resources to justifyModern Warfare 2DLC remakes.
While there is a chance that these remakes could come as a surprise seasonal addition, or in a paid DLC likeModern Warfare Remastereddid withCall of Duty 4’s post-launch locations, it seems like fans of the originalMW2could be out of luck. It would be a genuine shame if these maps never got a second chance, as a few of them were real standouts. Beyond that,Black Ops Cold Warhas proven that DLC maps can feel great in a modern release, asBO1’s Drive-Inplayed wonderfully in that game. For now, fans can simply hope that Sledgehammer Games will take the extra time to fully completeModern Warfare 3’s collection of OGMW2maps.
