Activision announces theCall of DutyVR game will be free for all PlayStation 4 owners, not just for those who purchaseInfinite Warfare, as was previously announced.

Friday looks to be a big day forCall of Dutyfans. WithCall of Duty: Infinite Warfarelaunching along withCall of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered, there’s plenty for fans of the series to do. But that’s not all, at least for those planning to pick up PlayStation VR when it releases next week.

Activision announced some time ago that PlayStation 4 players who purchaseInfinite Warfarewould gain free access toCall of Duty’s VR experience, dubbedJackal Assault. However, a new blog post reveals thatJackal Assaultwill be available to all PS4 owners, even those who don’t purchaseInfinite Warfare.

Activision calls the move an “added bonus on November 4” for all PlayStation 4 owners, though gamers will need aPlayStation VR headsetto access the game. That said, it’s a nice surprise that even those who aren’t planning to pick upInfinite Warfarewill have a chance to play it. Who knows, there may be those few PlayStation VR owners who tryJackal Assaultand purchaseInfinite Warfareas a result.

Since the game was already planned as a freebie forInfinite Warfarepurchasers, there’s really no reason for Activision to hold it back from the rest of the PlayStation VR player base. Chances are the game isn’t very long, and will likely give Activision a greater pool of players to gain feedback from, allowing the company to make better VR gamers in the future.

Jackal Assaultwas first announced back in September during theCall of DutyXP event. Activision says the game “immerses you in the cockpit of a Jackal, the personal, multi-role fighter jet” from the upcomingInfinite Warfare.Jackal Assaultwill be one of a handful of games launching alongside the PlayStation VR release this month.

With the holiday buying season coming up, and competition between Sony and Microsoft as strong as it’s ever been, it seems to be in Sony’s best interest to offer as many VR experiences for PlayStation VR owners as possible. WhileMicrosoft has announced a VR headsetcoming in the future, it won’t make it out in time for the holiday season and hasn’t yet been confirmed for Xbox, so Sony has to capitalize on the current opportunity to capture as many VR-interested gamers as possible. With the Microsoft Project Scorpio releasing next holiday season, Sony’s window of opportunity to hog VR sales in the market is small.

What do you think aboutJackal Assaultbecoming free for all PS4 owners? Are you planning to try the game?

Jackal Assaultreleases for PlayStation 4 on July 25, 2025 alongsideCall of Duty: Infinite WarfareandCall of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered, which will both release on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
