Major Nelson announces via Twitter thatCall of Duty: World at Waris now available on Xbox One via backward compatibility, along with three other new games.

Last year, Microsoft brought great joy to gamers around the world when it introduced backward compatible gaming for the Xbox One. Gamers were once again able to play their favorite titles from Xbox 360, both with virtual and hard copy games.

Sincebackward compatibility launched in November 2015, gamers have enjoyed periodic announcements to the backward compatible library of games. Today, Microsoft’s Larry Hyrb, better known by his gamertag “Major Nelson,” announced four new titles available on Xbox One via backward compatibility, includingCall of Duty: World at War.

Since backward compatibility was first announced,Call of Dutygames have been at the top of the list of requested games. And whileWorld at Warisn’t the firstCall of Dutygame to be playable on Xbox One, it’s definitely one of the most requested.

To date, Xbox One owners can now playCall of Duty 2,Call of Duty 3,Call of Duty: Black Ops, andCall of Duty: World at War, provided they have a digital or hard copy of the Xbox 360 game. Those who don’t yet own the games can buy them used online or from a local gaming store, or pick them up digitally directly from the Xbox One store.

The other three games coming to Xbox One backward compatibility withWorld at WarareFunTown Mahjong,E4: Every Extend Extra Extreme, andEncleverment Experiment. To date, there are more than 250 Xbox 360 games available on Xbox One backward compatibility.

While Microsoft is able to prepare games for backward compatibility without the aid of developers, Microsoft needs approval from developers to release games as backward compatible. It’s a little surprising to seeWorld at Warsee release just as Activision prepares to launchCall of Duty: Infinite WarfareandCall of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered. Additionally,Call of Duty 3was added to the list of backward compatible games just a week ago.

Granted, this could be a strategic move on the part of Activision, which may see the release of two olderCall of Dutygames to backward compatibility as free press in preparation forInfinite Warfare’s launch in November.

That said, it’s highly unlikely gamers will see anotherCall of Dutygame make it to backward compatibility prior toInfinite Warfare’s release. ReleasingModern Warfare 2or3, orBlack Ops 2at this point may distract players too much fromInfinite Warfare. And withrumors ofModern Warfare Remasteredcoming as a solo purchasesometime after it launches withInfinite Warfare, Xbox One gamers may not see anotherCall of Dutybackward compatible announcement until well into 2017.

What do you think aboutCall of Duty: World at Warcoming to backward compatibility on the Xbox One? Do you think it will disrupt sales ofInfinite WarfareandModern Warfare Remastered?
