The last year has been a troubling one for Polish developer CD Projekt Red. The release of the long anticipatedCyberpunk 2077was met with harsh criticism over an extremely buggy release coupled with lackluster reception to the game itself. It wasdue toCyberpunk 2077’s “broken” launch, especially so on first iteration hardware like the launch Xbox One and PlayStaion 4, that prompted an extreme response from one storefront.
Amid a torrent of requests for refunds,Sony opted to removeCyberpunk 2077from the PlayStation Storedue in part to the game’s unplayable nature on the base PlayStation 4. WithCyberpunk 2077still missing from the digital store, CD Projekt Red as provided an update on the matter.

In new comments provided to investors this week, CD Projekt CEO Adam Kicinski confirmed that the publisher was unaware of when Sony will reinstateCyberpunk 2077for purchase. Kicinski elaborated that discussions are ongoing between CD Projekt Red continuing to provide updates to Sony regarding new patches and fixes. Kicinski also confirmed that the removal ofCyberpunk 2077was “an exclusive decision of Sony.” This was likely a reminder to investors that CD Projekt Red has little control or influence on Sony when it comes toCyperpunk 2077’s return to the PlayStation Store.
This latest news comes as the second update regardingCyberpunk 2077’s reinstatement on the PlayStation Store. Back in March, Senior VP of Business Development Michal Nowakowski noted thatthanks in part to the release ofCyberpunk 2077’s Patch 1.2, the game was closer to its PS Store return. Now, two months following that statement, it appears the game is no closer to being relisted. Not long after Nowakowski’s comments, a CD Projekt Red executive would note that the game’s removal directly impacted sales on other platforms.
While PlayStation players are stuck buying a physical copy if they want to explore Night City, CD Projekt Red is likely more focused on the issue of the impending lawsuit related toCyberpunk 2077’s marketing and launch. It was confirmed yesterday that theconsolidated lawsuit against CD Projekt Red is slated to be filed by the end of June.
WithCyberpunk 2077’s removal from the PlayStation Store lasting close to six months with no change expected, Sony’s decision has made a considerable impact on the industry. It is rare for a major release, even a buggy one, to be completely pulled from a digital store. For some,Sony’s decision could have major implications for the companygoing forward.
Cyberpunk 2077is available on PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One, with PS5 and Xbox Series X versions also in development.
