As the premiere ofCobra Kaiseason 5 edges closer, fans of the show might be excited to hear season six is far from the only thing showrunners have planned, as the idea of a so-called MiyagiVerse got a boost fromThe Karate Kidstar Ralph Macchio himself.

In an interview withComicBook, both ofCobra Kai’s adult protagonists, Macchio and William Zabka, discussed the show’s potential, finally putting a name to the “Karate Kid Cinematic Universe” that’s been forming since the series came out and naming some of the storylines that could come to fruition in it. For example, Macchio ponders, “Is there a Miyagi origin story? Is there aCobra Kaiprequel beforeThe Karate Kid? Is there spin-offs with some of the young cast of these characters?”

Macchio claims the showrunners will take the opportunity to explore these concepts if given the chance. For their part,Cobra Kaicreators Josh Heald and Justin Hurwitzhave said numerous times that they have big plans for the franchise, with the current series expanding several seasons beyond the upcoming fifth entry, in addition to them keeping some extra ideas in store. Macchio backs ups those statements, saying there’s been writing material from season 3 that didn’t end up being used until season 4. “There’s stuff that was in Season 5 that we know we shot that is being held for the future if we get that green light,” he said, meaning there’s plenty of karate action left in the valley.

On the topic of reviving old things from the ’80s, the two actors were also asked about some of their favorite sequels to classics, and both of them were eager tocallTop Gun: Maverickthe perfect sequelbecause “they did everything right, I think theTop Gunsequel was really, really hit on all cylinders.” Zabka agreed, saying, “honestly just wanted to thank Tom for that movie.” Whether these ideas for moreKarate Kidspin-offs will ever see the light of day remains to be seen, though the show’s creators have gotten the green light to oversee unrelated projects likeDuke Nukemand aFerris Bueller’s Day Offspinoff.

So far,Cobra Kaihas proved to be a shrewd acquisition by Netflix, with the series topping the streaming charts every time a new season comes out. Funnily enough,Cobra Kaiended up defecting from YouTube Red to Netflix because Heald and Hurwitz didn’t get guarantees that the company would buy the fourth season of teenage karate drama, but the two were clearly onto something.

Cobra Kaiseason 5 has plenty of questionsfans need to be answered, such as the fate of John Kreese, what Chozen can teach Daniel, and ifKarate Kidfans will someday get a Hilary Swank cameo on the show.

Cobra Kaiseason 5 will be released on Netflix on Jul 12, 2025.
