Fans of the Monsterverse will be glad to hear that a sequel to the successfulGodzilla vs. Kongis a go and will start production this summer in Australia. The two titans will return to the big screen to partake in a survival of the fittest, and the film has also cast its first human character. It was confirmed that actor Dan Stevens has come on board in a lead role.
Similar to the firstGodzilla vs. Kong, it seems like the sequel will put the two titans up against each other. Released in 2021, the Legendary Pictures production turned out to be a big success at the box office and was one of the films recognized as driving people back to the theaters despite the ongoing pandemic. It is, therefore, not surprising for fans to see the studio going full steam ahead withtheGodzilla vs. Kongsequel beginning production soon. It seems like the studio is also continuing the trend of bringing on a stellar cast to be a part of the titans’ journey.

With Stevens confirmed in a lead role by Deadline, it remains to be seen who else will be joining thenext installment in the Monsterverse. It was, however, revealed that director Adam Wingard, who broughtGodzilla vs. Kongto life, is back on board as well. Stevens and Wingard have worked together previously on the action-thrillerThe Guest. At this point, no plot details for the upcoming sequel have been announced, and there is no target release date either. With the film going into production soon, more updates could be arriving later this year.
Godzilla vs. Kongwas able to earn $100 million at the domestic box office, and while this number might not seem too big compared to other successful projects, it was impressive considering the lockdown restrictions placed globally. The film also performed wellupon its release on HBO Max. Fans appreciated that the film was largely a standalone, and previous installments in the Monsterverse did not impact its plot. It worked purely as fan service and allowed viewers to watch two larger-than-life monsters battle it out in different settings. This alone was enough to get fans of either franchise to watch the film in theaters or on the streaming service.
Stevens has worked on very specific projects in the past, with 2017’sBeauty in the Beastprobably being his only foray into the typically commercial projects. He was last seen in the political seriesGaslit, where he portrays the role of White House Counsel John Dean. The series looks at the Watergate scandal from the 1970s and offers a modern twist by focusing on untold stories. Stevens also playedthe protagonist in FX’sLegion, which is arguably one of the most unique superhero stories told on television.
Godzilla vs. Kong 2is currently in pre-production at Legendary Pictures.
