Hideo Kojima presents a brand new trailer for his mysteriousDeath Strandingproject at The Game Awards 2016, confirming the involvement of Guillermo del Toro.
Geoff Keighley kicked off The Game Awards 2016 in style, taking a moment to honor legendary developer Hideo Kojima with an Industry Icon award. Kojima accepted the award in a short, heartfelt speech, and then treated fans to a mind-bending new trailer for his mysteriousDeath Strandingproject, confirming the involvement of celebrated director Guillermo del Toro and actorMads Mikkelsen.
The newDeath Strandingtrailer starts off much like the one shown at this past year’s E3 event, with dead sea creatures littering the ground. The camera then pans up, revealingGuillermo del Toroholding a strange device that houses an infant similar to the one seen in the firstDeath Strandingtrailer.
Another infant appears in the black water beneat del Toro’s feet, floating upstream to a crowd of intimidating soldiers in a tunnel. Leading these soldiers is Mads Mikkelsen’s character, who appears to have strange supernatural powers. Judging by Mikkelsen’s sinister appearance in the trailer, it seems as though rumors that he is playing the antagonist inDeath Strandingare true, though further details on his character are not available at this time.

The trailer was met with uproarious applause from the audience. Their enthusiasm was warranted, as the impressive footage was displayed with 4K resolution and was running on a PlayStation 4 Pro, meaning fans can expect the final product to look very similar to what they saw at The Game Awards 2016.
While visually impressive and exciting, theDeath Strandingtrailer was also confusing. Unfortunately, there’s still little fans know for certain about Kojima’s mysterious post-Konami project except it features an all-star cast of celebrities (with Guillermo del Toro and Mads Mikkelsen joining the previously confirmedNorman Reedus) and that it will featureopen world action gameplay.
Of course,Death Strandingis still early in development, so it may have been unreasonable expect more from the game at this point. However, fans should know that aDeath Strandingpanel is being held at thePlayStation Experience eventthis coming weekend, and there’s a chance that more concrete details on the game will be unveiled then.
