Summary
TheFalloutTV series for Amazon Prime Videos is one of the great curiosities in that nebulous space between video games and television. Luckily, some haze has cleared up thanks to ironically hazy footage.
WhenPrime Video first revealed itsFalloutseries, reactions to the idea ranged from optimism to downright fear. It’s one thing to capture the look of such a recognizable gaming staple. But it’s another entirely to stay true to the vibe maintained by the franchise. Luckily, a few sneak peeks have allayed concerns over the visual aspect of theFalloutseries, as that painstaking effort has been employed to mimic the art style of the games (well, at leastFallout 4, at any rate) almost flawlessly. But now, a new leak has something else important to offer.

At Gamescom, Germany’s gaming convention held in late August, guests were treated to a closed-door teaser for Prime Video’sFalloutseries. Luckily for the fans outside that theater, one attendee managed to film it and share it with theFalloutTwitter fan pageFalloutFilms, who recently posted it on their account. The result is a slightly blurry but otherwise nice and clear look at the upcoming series. Right from the start, it radiates theFalloutlook to a T.
TheFalloutteaser opens with shots of vertibird flight vehicles carrying soldiers before transitioning to a squad of figures clad in the series' trademark power armor doing that classic “walking toward the camera slower than they probably should in a warzone” movie shot. The power armormay be a practical effect, which would be no small feat given how bulky those outfits are. Of course, it may be CGI, but going the practical route would be preferable if they can pull it off.
Next, the trailer shifts to a familiar sight forFalloutfans: the inside of a vault. A young vault dweller looks seemingly ready to step out of the newly opened vault door, following in the footsteps of everyFalloutgame protagonist who came before. But the following shot is the real treat here, as fans can finally get their first look atWalton Goggins in theFalloutseriesas his unnamed ghoul character (people exposed to radiation that extends their lives but rots their flesh), all smiles in a shootout and feeling very reminiscent of fan-favorite ghoul companion Hancock fromFallout 4. The teaser then ends with a viscerally striking scene of pre-wasteland times as the bombs begin dropping, first in the background and then right in the middle of a crowded city. Previous updates from Prime Video regardingFallouthave confirmed that it takes place in Los Angeles, so fans from the area can probably expect to see some familiar landmarks in the before and after times.
It’s a great first look, but it raises some new questions. Will the show feature an extended sequence in pre-bombing times? Are the shots of the soldiers the equivalent of the intro seen in each game? Will Goggins play Hancock? Whatever the case, theFalloutTV serieslooks like it’ll be worth a curious viewing at the very least.
