WARNING: This Article Contains MASSIVE Spoilers for Glass Onion: A Knives Out MysteryNetflix’sGlass Onion, starring Daniel Craig, has quickly become the third most watched film in a 10-day period since it was released on December 23. The sequel to 2019’sKnives Outsees Craig reprise his role as Benoit Blanc, the world’s greatest detective, as he’s quickly thrust into a perplexing and tension-filled mystery on a private island owned by tech billionaire Miles Bron. The movie’s plot has several twists and turns which fans of the genre would expect, but perhaps more unexpected are the several references to the cult classic video gameAmong Us. The whodunnit nature of the plot facilitates several references toAmong Us, some of which are more obvious than others.

Among Us, thesocial deduction indie game that was released in 2018, is slowly waning in popularity. In an attempt to regain some of the title’s early momentum, the recent introduction of anew mode titled Hide and Seekspins the formula on its head, with players known as imposters tasked with seeking out crew mates who are hidden throughout the map. Developer InnerSloth is clearly trying to ensure the game stays relevant, and having a clear presence and influence on such a popular new movie should certainly help.

Glass Onion Draws Clear Inspiration From Among Us

The first clue that the movie would draw onAmong Us' premise is an extremely obvious one. Early in the movie, Blanc is shown to be actually playing the game himself while in the bath, foreshadowing a large plot twist. Somewhat hilariously though, he is swiftly identified as the imposter by his fellow crew mates, who berate ‘the world’s best detective’ for hiding his true intentions so poorly. Blanc responds by admitting maybe the game just isn’t his thing, before his friends suggest they playQuiplashinstead.

As the movie continues setting up, Miles Bron invites several of his close friends to his private island for a weekend of fun and games, including a carefully constructed murder mystery. Two of these guests though - Andi Brand, Miles' old business partner who was swiftly ousted just before he and his company hit the big time, and Benoit Blanc himself - seem glaringly out of place. Further on in the movie, it is revealed that the woman posing as Andi is actually an imposter, her twin sister Helen. This is another clear reference toAmong Usand its premise. Andi was in fact killed prior to the movie’s events, and Helen, at the behest ofBenoit Blanc, reluctantly agreed to impersonate her sister in order to try and unravel the mystery of her death. Ironically, Blanc himself is also an imposter for much of the movie, lying to Miles and the others about how and why he is present on the island.

The movie also contains a scene where all of Miles' friends are together in one room, confused and trying to work out who committed the murder of one of their fellow guests. This scene is reminiscent ofcalling an Emergency Meeting inAmong Us, where a player can call the rest of their crewmates together in order to attempt to determine who are the imposters among the crew.

Glass Onion’s popularity has led to at least one more sequel being confirmed, with both director Rian Johnson and Daniel Craig seemingly happy to continue putting Benoit Blanc through his paces. Theex-James Bond actoris clearly having fun with the part and is showcasing some of his best work as a result. With several high-profile cameos and a tense, gripping plot that will keep viewers guessing as they try to solve the mystery, fans ofAmong Us-as well as murder mysteries in general - will find plenty to love aboutGlass Onion.
