The Elder Scrolls: SkyrimandDOOMhave something unusual in common; players can’t seem to stop finding new ways to play the games on odd systems and hardware. Whether displayingSkyrimon a pregnancy testor playing a game within a game by puttingDOOMinMinecraft, fans get a lot of enjoyment out of putting the games onto systems or hardware they were never intended to be used on.
Of course, not every one of these has to be a technological challenge. One player has now shown others what it looks like whenSkyrimis played on an old-school CRT monitor, a piece of technology that was outdated even whenSkyrimfirst released.

These days,Skyrimlooks its best in VR or on ultra high resolution monitors, letting players see the world of Tamriel in all its glory. But a CRT monitor is still perfectly capable of displaying the game, too.Skyrimfan Cliffworms on Reddit shared an image of their CRT monitor playingSkyrim, with what appears to be an archer Khajit player character standing in the frame.
Getting the most out of ahigh-end GPUrequires display equipment to match, which this CRT monitor obviously isn’t capable of. Cliffworms mentions that the feed is coming from a relatively modern computer, which still had the correct port needed to hook up the monitor on its older motherboard. The CRT can definitely displaySkyrim, but it wouldn’t be the most enjoyable experience for the player.
However, it’s worth noting that just becauseCRT monitors are older technologydoesn’t mean that they don’t have a place in the gaming sphere, even now. While preservation of older games is extremely important, many players have noted that games of the 1990s often don’t look as good as they once did when played on flat screen TVs. Modern HD flat screen TVs and monitors display images differently than CRTs did, making some pixelated games appear fuller and crisper on CRTs than modern screens. As such, CRT monitors and TVs are in demand by some players who want to replicate the original experience as much as possible.
Skyrimis too recent a game to benefit from a CRT monitor, but it’s not the worst it’s looked, either. Players have found ways to playSkyrimon some truly bizarre equipment, assuming that they want visuals at all.Skyrimon Alexawas played entirely via voice commands and with verbal descriptions. If players want to enjoySkyrim, the opportunities to do so are truly endless.
The Elder Scrolls: Skyrimis available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox 360, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
