Despite a lack of new titles and seemingly taking a backseat to other Nintendo IPs as of late, theMetroidseries has been in the news quite a bit recently. While fans are always eager to learn more on the progress of Retro Studios’Metroid Prime 4, the series made news just last week when someunhappy fans harassed a formerMetroid Primedeveloperafter expressing doubt of aMetroid Primetrilogy coming to the Switch.
Aside fromMetroid Prime 4, it seems that fans of the series are eager for any news whatsoever, as its latest release was back in 2017 with theMetroid 2remakeMetroid: Samus Returnson the Nintendo 3DS. Now, it turns out that fans could actually see another 2DMetroidtitle soon, as a credible leaker has confidently confirmed the existence of a brand-new 2D entry in the series.

Credible leaker Zippo has previously made waves for rumors on a supposed 2DMetroidgame being in development, but now, the insider confidently claims that the title “200 percent exists,” and is even finished. By the looks of it, the new 2DMetroidsimply needs to be announced by Nintendo, and both the Japanese video company andMetroiddeveloper Yoshio Sakamoto are reportedly pleased with how the game has turned out.
Additionally, the insider claims thatthe 2DMetroidgameis being worked on by Spanish developer MercurySteam, which also worked onMetroid: Samus Returnsand a plethora ofCastlevaniatitles. One more tidbit of information that may excite fans is that Zippo claims the upcoming game will run at a smooth 60FPS. As the Nintendo Switch has already begun to somewhat show its age in hardware capabilities, especially when compared to the newest console generation, it’s not often that newer Switch titles break 30FPS, particularly in the system’s handheld mode.
Finally, Zippo closes with a hard prediction that the game will finally be revealed during Nintendo’s E3 presentation next month. If Zippo’s other claims and predictions, including E3 reveals ofThe Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2as well as newDonkey KongandFire Emblemtitles, come to fruition, it sounds like Nintendo has quite the E3 presentation planned for fans, especially after a somewhat dry 2020 for the company in terms of software releases.
Aside from rumored titles and announcements, Nintendo fans hope to learn more information onupcoming games likeMario Golf: Super Rush,The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD, andPokemon Brilliant DiamondandShining Pearl. Although E3 is transitioning to an all-virtual format this year, fans seem to be as excited as ever with just one month to go.
