This theory turned out to be true as McDonald’s locations in the United States have started carrying toys based onThe Super Mario Bros. Movie. The current lineup of toys includes Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, Donkey Kong, and Bowser, all of which had previously been seen in trailers. One interesting toy inclusion is a blue Luma, a character first introduced alongside Rosalina in the 2007 gameSuper Mario Galaxy. Movie.Pictures of the toys started making the rounds on social media, and the official Instagram page for McDonald’s confirmed the launch of the toys
Fans acted quickly to get to their nearest McDonald’s to get the toys for themselves before they became scarce. Given the amount of fervor there was over previous McDonald’s promotions like theAdult Happy Meal toysfrom this past October, this comes as no surprise. Many of these customers are likely to be scalpers looking to sell the toys themselves for exorbitant prices, a lucrative decision given the strong popularity of theMariocast of characters.
McDonald’s is already well-known for its heavy promotion of Happy Meal tie-in toys. The fast-food chain has also done its fair share of tie-ins with video game properties, such as this year’sPokemon, Sonic the Hedgehog, andMario KartHappy Meals. The monumental popularity of theMariofranchise ensures that this line of toys will be successful, regardless of whether it releases months before the movie it is based on. History has taught fans that these toys will more than likely become hard to find over time, so they will have to act fast and have their wallets ready for a chance of owning them.
