Casey Hudson left BioWare last year when he stepped down as General Manager of the studio. Many fans of his work onMass Effectwondered where Hudson would end up and he has officially confirmed that he’s opening a new studio.
Mass Effectdirector Casey Hudson departed BioWare last year shortly after theDragon Age 4reveal. Hudson recently confirmed on his official Twitter that he has been working with some colleagues on a new development studio known as Humanoid Studios. It’s currently unclear ifDragon Age 4executive producer Mark Darrah who departed around the same time will be one of the aforementioned colleagues.

The team is currently hiring for several positions such as senior gameplay programmer, senior gameplay designer, director of operations, senior creative director, environment artist, senior level designer, and a 3D artist. While many roles are listed on the studios' website, some roles may already be filled. These developers will also be offered creative freedom, something that’s more common in theindependent level of game designthat Humanoid Studios will inhabit.
The official website for the studio is pretty minimal but it suggests that Casey Hudson is looking for a team that will combine excellence in the arts. It mentions “advanced sciences” which will help Humanoid Studios deliver interactive new IP. Many BioWare games innovated significantly with interactive RPGs and Hudson may bringsome of what he learned with BioWareto his new studio.
According to Casey Hudson, this is the first tiny step in the Humanoid Studios journey. The formerMass Effectdirector is currently only able to discuss minor details about the new studio, but his announcement emanates enthusiasm. Hudson caused a lot of speculation when he departed BioWare last year, but it’s clear that he’s found a new project to work on. While Casey Hudson was with BioWare for the announcement ofDragon Age 4, the last major project that he worked on thatsaw the light of day wasAnthem.
WhileCasey Hudsonstopped short of confirming BioWare veteran Mark Darrah as part of the Humanoid Studios, it’s possible that he may be joining his former colleague in making independent games. The official Humanoid Studios website mentions talented developers from around the world and Hudson specifically mentions colleagues in his Twitter post so some familiar faces may be on board. Since the studio is just getting started, it will likely be awhile before Humanoid Studios announces its first IP.
