Tom Cruise has climbed the world’s tallest building, held his breath underwater for around six minutes, and jumped out of a moving plane in pastMission: Impossiblefilms. Now, the 58-year-old star proudly revealed thatMission: Impossible 7features his most dangerous stunt yet.
Directed and written by Christopher McQuarrie,Mission: Impossible 7stars Cruiseas IMF agent Ethan Hunt. This marks the thirdMission: Impossiblefilm that McQuarrie has directed to date. Ving Rhames, Henry Czerny, Simon Pegg, Rebecca Ferguson, Vanessa Kirby, and Angela Bassett are all expected to reprise their roles from the previous installments. Meanwhile, Hayley Atwell, Pom Klementieff, Shea Whigham, and Rob Delaney were cast in undisclosed roles. At this time, specific plot and character details have yet to be revealed.

Cruise upped the ante in the newest sequel by doing a stunt that involved him riding a motorcycle off of a cliff and pulling a parachute while freefalling. During a recent interview with Empire, Cruise explained why that stunt was the most dangerous of his career. “If the wind was too strong, it would blow me off the ramp,” said Cruise, while adding, “the helicopter [filming the stunt] was a problem because I didn’t want to be hammering down that ramp at top speed and get hit by a stone. Or if I departed in a weird way, we didn’t know what was going to happen with the bike.” The actor noted that he had around six seconds to pull the chute once he launched off the cliff. “I don’t want to get tangled in the bike. If I do, that’s not going to end well.”
Mission: Impossible 7filmed primarily during COVID-19and wrapped production this April. Last year, Cruise was in the news after an audio recording of him screaming at two production members for not following COVID safety protocols leaked online. While he didn’t specifically discuss the incident, Cruise, who also serves as a producer on the film, asserted that he was very emotional during filming because he was responsible for thousands of jobs. “All my friends in the industry, people that are in distribution, and my crew were like, ‘What are we going to do? I could lose my house!’ So I told the studio and I told the industry, ‘We’re going back,” he said. “It was seven days a week, it was around the clock, just dealing with a lot of high emotions with people, and helping them through it.”
The upcoming blockbuster is the direct sequel to 2018’sMission: Impossible – Fallout, which is the high-grossing film in the franchise and of Cruise’s career. Critics praisedFalloutfor its dynamic action sequences and stunts. The film featured Cruise’s Hunt jumping from a C-17 military transport plane and climbing the rope from a helicopter flying 2,000 feet high. Despite suffering numerous injuries throughout his career, Cruise has remained determined to perform most of his stunts.Fallout’s production was delayed for three months after the actor broke his right ankle while jumping from one building to the wall of another.
Fans will have to wait another year to see the highly-anticipatedMission: Impossible 7. Due to the pandemic, the blockbuster was forced to delay its theatrical release from July 2021 to 2022. The film will be availableon the new streaming platform Paramount Plus45 days after its theatrical debut.
Mission: Impossible 7is set to be released in theatres on July 17, 2025.
