Super Smash Bros. Ultimateis a massive game featuring a huge number of characters from all across the gaming industry. DespiteSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate’s sizable roster of playable fighters, there were still some characters fans wanted to see that didn’t make the cut. Some of these characters weren’t featured as playable fighters, but were instead represented through other means in-game, with some fans thinking that representation excludes them from being featured as a fighter.
For example, many fans wanted to seeWaluigi inSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate, but that never happened, with some pointing to his existence as an Assist Trophy in the game as the reason why. The recently released crossover fighting gameMultiVersusis clearly inspired bySuper Smash Bros., and so some fans have expressed concern that it will apply similar rules to the characters it adds to its roster, leaving out those who are represented in other means.

A conversation about this recently started on Twitter when a fan asked to see Spike from theTom and Jerrycartoonsadded to theMultiVersusroster of playable fighters. Another Twitter use pointed out that Spike is already seen via a KO effect, concluding that he would likely not be added to the roster. Others pointed out how certain KO effects already feature or reference fighters that already exist on the roster, and then developer Tony Huynh stepped in to provide some clarification.
According to Huynh, KO effects do not mean that a character can’t become a playable member of the roster in future updates. This means thatMultiVersuswon’t necessarily be playing by the same rules asSuper Smash Bros.when it comes to new characters, and so pretty much anyone is on the table.
MultiVersusalready has an incredibly diverse roster, with Season 1 set to add at least four more characters to the mix by the time it wraps up on November 15. As announced by Player First Games,MultiVersuswill be adding Morty Smithto the roster on August 23, with Rick Sanchez coming a bit later in the year. DC Comics hero Black Adam is on the way as well, as is Stripe fromGremlins.
Data mining efforts have leaked two more potential characters for theMultiVersusroster as well in the form of theWicked Witch of the West and Beetlejuice. It’s unclear exactly when they could be added, but it’s possible that they’re coming at some point in Season 2.
MultiVersusis out now for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
