Last year, major studios withheld their theatrical movie trailers because the pandemic had still forced theaters in Los Angeles and New York to be shut during the Super Bowl. This year they’re back, and we may see new trailers for Marvel Studios’Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,Moon Knight, and Pixar’sLightyear.
Given the ratings boost seen in the AFC and NFC championship games, studios are expected to spend money for a spot to capture the huge audience and generate buzz for their upcoming titles. In addition toDoctor Strange 2and the other aforementioned projects, summer blockbusters that fans are already anticipating includeMinions: The Rise of Gru,Jurassic World: Dominion, andJordan Peele’sNope.

In previous Super Bowls, the major studios have been known to use the sports event to create a blitz on the marketing for their upcoming films. Notably, in 2018 Netflix announced the immediate release ofThe Cloverfield Paradoxafter the Super Bowl. That same year, Dwayne Johnson went toThe Tonight Showto promote his movieSkyscraper.Last year, Universal ran previews forF9,M. Night Shyamalan’sOld, and itsBob Odenkirk action movieNobody. Deadline reported on the trailers that may be shown during Super Bowl 2022.
In recent years, streamers have also been known to be major players in the Super Bowl movie trailer ad spots. Netflix recently released a 4th wall-breaking ad for all its major movies scheduled for release this year and is confirmed to be airing an ad forRyan Reynolds’The Adam Project. Amazon, not to be left behind, will be promotingThursday Night Footballthis year, as the streamer has exclusive rights to it in the fall. Universal streaming service Peacock will also be airing a new trailer for its Will Smith executive-produced drama seriesBel-Air.
Warner Bros., Sony, and Apple are expected to continue their tradition of sitting out on promoting any of their films during Super Bowl. Hulu andHBO Max are expectedto also join them.
Fans should be excited about an action-packed summer with films of all genres scheduled to drop in the coming months. The sneak previews during the Super Bowl are expected to generate glee and give fans more information on movies, some of which are surrounded by many rumors and some that have no information at all beyond a title or a poster.
