One of the firstPokemongames to come for the franchise’s 25th anniversary isNew Pokemon Snap, which is set in a new locale known as the Lental region, according to a recent announcement.

Last summer, The Pokemon Company announced an unexpectedupcoming game:New Pokemon Snap, a follow up to the original on Nintendo 64. Over two decades later,New Pokemon Snapwill be coming to the Switch in April. Not much is known about the Lental region inPokemonlore, but similar to the originalPokemon Snap, players will explore an island to survey Pokemon. It looks to be quite similar to the Nintendo 64 title: Though it’s no longer set on Pokemon Island, the Lental region is a cluster of islands, according toNintendo of America’s recent announcement. Players will still be surveying Pokemon in their original habitats to spot their unique behaviors.

This begs a new question while still hanging on an old one: how willNew Pokemon Snaphandle the Pokedex?Pokemon Snaponly included 63 of the original 151 Pokemon, so it’s likely thatNew Snapwon’t includeall 898 Pokemon. New Pokemon are often introduced in the main series games, and the franchise is nearing the 1,000th entry in the Pokedex. It’s unlikely that a spinoff would reach this milestone by introducing new Pokemon, but becauseNew Pokemon Snapis set in a brand new region, it could be possible.

The trailer from Nintendo shows off beautiful landscapes from the Lental region. One improvement that the game is making is high-qualityPokemongraphics, a feature the franchise has been criticized for in the past. The graphics ofNew Pokemon Snapare closer to the quality many fans hoped to see from a modernPokemongame, though many feltPokemon SwordandShield’s graphics were a disappointment.

WithNew Pokemon Snap, however, that won’t be the case. The game is all about exploration and photography, so it’s great to see Nintendo paying close attention to visual quality and enhancements to make the game all the more immersive. Lental looks like it’ll have unique settings and encounters as well. For example, late moments in the trailer shows light particles floating around a Meganium at night, so players will have interesting photos to look forward to in the new Lental region.

New Pokemon Snaplaunches for Nintendo Switch on August 01, 2025.
