Since launch, Activision-Blizzard has grownOverwatch’s roster considerably, adding a plethora of new heroes to the shooter. Now, Blizzard has announced another newOverwatchhero, an eccentric physicist by the name of Sigma.
Sigma, whoBlizzard has been teasing for a while, will be the first new Tank hero added toOverwatchsince Wrecking Ball, giving some extra padding to the roster- which has felt sorely lacking in Tanks for some time. Sigma’s actual abilities tie in well with his back story, which revolves around a black hole experiment going wrong.

First, Sigma has Experimental Barrier, a shield move similar to Reinhart and Orisa’s barriers that can be used to help defend an area or move through choke points. However, Sigma is capable of deploying this barrier in a variety of interesting ways, separating him from some of the other characters. For instance, Sigma can send his barrier down range towards a Pharah ultimate, causing Pharah to take the splash damage from the attack and likely killing her. It’s an interesting move, and lines up well with the type of countering Blizzard wants when theyintegrate Role Queue.
Sigma also has Hyper Spheres, which are his main weapon of attack. The Hyper Spheres are a two-round burst projectile with a short range. The spheres can bounce off surfaces and explode in a burst of proximity damage upon reaching its target. The projectiles also have a slight gravitational pull to them, which will likely come in handy when trying to get hostile players off of an objective.
Kinect Grasp is another one of Sigma’s abilities, allowing him to catch incoming damage and turn it into a protective shield for himself. As of now, this ability can add up to 400 shields, though Kaplan did state that this may change with time.
Accretion is an offensive ability that will allow Sigma to form a rock and throw it at an enemy, knocking them down and causing a large amount of damage. The move is telegraphed to allow players to dodge it, which should keep it from feeling too overpowered.
Finally, Sigma’s ultimate ability is called Gravitic Flux, which operates just about how it sounds. The move targets a ground area, similar to Doomfist’s ult, and sends enemies within the radius into the air. Enemies will then be suspended for some time, making them vulnerable to damage. At the end of the ultimate, each character comes crashing down, resulting in a healthy amount of fall damage.
Sigma sounds like a pretty strong character with an interesting suite of abilities. There’s a good chance fans will consider him O.P. when he reaches the full game, but that happens just about every time. All in all, it’s good to see these type of regular content updates, as they have kept Overwatch relevant, even being one of themost talked-about games of 2018.
