Platinum Gameshad a surprise announcement forSquare Enix’s E3 2018 press conference, unveilingBabylon’s Fallsto the world. A lengthy cinematic trailer that’s first half cataloged what appeared to be historical events withinBabylon’s Fallset the tone for the announcement. But it was the ending of the trailer, showing a speedy sword slash against a large foe, that made clearBabylon’s Fallis a Platinum game through and through.

Babylon’s Fallappears to be adark fantasy action RPG, judging from the hints in the trailer. The historical records shown tell of the discovery of a power called the “Oversoul.” 500 years of empires rising and falling, gods being birthed into the world and casting their wrath on humanity, plagues, invention, and more follow the Oversoul’s coming. It’s clear thatBabylon’s Fallhas been provided with a rich and dramatic lore. But the most important lines from the historical records mention the coming of what the trailer calls “Nomads,” which may be the game’s player characters:

This is presumably whereBabylon’s Fallwill begin. 500 years of war leading to a confrontation of immense proportion.Babylonis well known as a term used to describe a society that’s grown oppressive, intolerable. The meaning behind the titlePlatinum Gameshas given the release is clear. The players will take on the role of leading humanity’s fight back.

One specific detail that may be massively important is the key art shown towards the end of the trailer, marking what can be assumed to be the start ofBabylon’s Fall’s story. It features four characters standing before an immense city, weapons in hand. This could either imply that players will have their choice of class and character inBabylon’s Fall, or it could just as likely imply thatBabylon’s Fallfeatures cooperative multiplayer.

Platinum Games and Square Enix obviously have a lot more to share aboutBabylon’s Falland what fans can look forward to. More information is hopefully in the works for E3, or otherwise in the months ahead. So far all that’s been confirmed outside of the trailer is that Platinum Games' Hideki Kamiya is not involved with the project. The rest remains up in the air.
