SomeCyberpunk 2077fans are angry at developer CD Projekt RED for again officially confirming that it is working on an online multiplayer mode for the game. The studio confirmed itsplans for multiplayer contentyesterday on Twitter, also revealing that it is hiring for several new positions to come and work on it.
While someCyberpunk 2077fans were ecstatic at the possibility of getting to roam around Night City with friends, others were much less enthusiastic, responses on Twitter show. Under the officialCyberpunk 2077tweets about multiplayer, there’s a mountain of messages from people telling CD Projekt RED to scrap the idea. One Twitter user named Fogbrain is concerned that multiplayer will take away fromCyberpunk 2077’s single player, despite CD Projekt RED having said that it plans to finish the single player development first. Other users said that games rarely have good single player and multiplayer modes and that they don’t want to sacrifice story quality for multiplayer content.

SomeCyberpunk 2077fans, like Twitter user A. Khaled, says that there’s “no way” thatCyberpunk 2077’s multiplayer mode won’t include microtransactions. CD Projekt RED has said that itdoesn’t like microtransactionsand it has also said that it won’t be “greedy” with its game like other, unnamed game developers are. Things could have changed though, and that’s what users like A. Khaled are worried about.
That Twitter user isn’t the only one with doubts about howCyberpunk 2077’s multiplayer content may be monetized. Several say that they don’t want the game to turn out like Grand Theft Auto Online.GTA Online makes millions of dollarsfor Rockstar Games and parent company Take-Two but it has also been heavily criticized by fans for trying to get them to spend so much money. New content in that game is expensive and often makes players grind or spend huge amounts on microtransactions.Cyberpunk 2077fans don’t want that for the sci-fi RPG.
At this point, it’s unclear which way things will go. CD Projekt RED will be creating this multiplayer content with an eye tomaking money but also for entertaining fans. These two things don’t have to be mutually exclusive, but the studio will have to try hard not to upset players. Whatever its plans forCyberpunk 2077post-launch multiplayer, more will be revealed closer to the game’s release date.
Cyberpunk 2077will be released on June 20, 2025 on PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One.
