Coal is the one resource you’ll need constantly in demand for crafting and smelting. Now, with more ways to get your hands on this black gold, you’ll never have to worry about running out again. Update 1.6 has truly made coal a much more accessible and we’ve updated this guide with all the ways you’re able to farm it.
Where to Find Coal in Stardew Valley
The quickest answer to locating coal isin the mines in the Mountain region,as well asinthe Skull CaverninStardew Valley’s Calico Desert. In general, however, coal is almost everywhere. Coal can be found when breaking rocks with the pickaxe, converted from wood through the Charcoal Kiln, produced from recycled trash, and even found in fishing chests and through panning.
Keep an eye out for coal-filled minecarts on certain levels of the standard Mines and brown miner’s bags on random floors of both the Mines and the Skull Cavern. All Coal carts will be refreshed and restocked with coal at the start of each year.
While exploring the Volcano Dungeon on Ginger Island, players can now find dedicatedCoal Nodes.These provide a more consistent source of coal while you’re adventuring there.
Coal is also dropped byenemies in Stardew Valley, including by Slimes, Stone, Wilderness and Iridium Golems, Shadow Brutes and Shadow Shamans. It is most commonly dropped from Dust Sprites, which are found in the ice levels of the Mines and have a 50% chance of dropping coal.
If all else fails, Coal can be purchased fromClintat the Blacksmith’s Shop for 150 gold for the first year and 250 gold for each year after. It can also be found in Geodes, which players can pay Clint 25 gold to break. Clint also sets up shop at the Desert Festival, where he sells up to 50 Coal for 5 Calico Eggs each.
Once you achieve MiningMastery inStardew Valley, you’ll receive theStatue of the Dwarf King. This statue offers a daily choice of two mining buffs. One of these options increases your chance of finding coal when breaking rocks.
What Is the Fastest Way to Farm Coal in Stardew Valley?
In order to ensure that a player gets the most coal possible while they are farming for it, there are a few things they need to do beforehand. Firstly,unlock levels 41-79 in the mines. These levels are the home of the Dust Sprites, which have the best chance (50%) to drop coal, and are easy to kill.
Equipping the Burglar’s Ring (obtained by defeating 500 Dust Sprites) doubles their loot drop rate, making this a very efficient method. Working through these frozen levels and killing all the Dust Sprites will grant players a decent amount of coal without much effort. On top of this, players can reset these levels by exiting and re-entering the mines.
To further increase the odds that players get the most coal they can, players should enter these levels on a lucky day. Once players have gotten their Mining skill to level 10, they should also selectthe Prospector profession in theirStardew Valleyplaythrough. This doubles a player’s chances of finding coal, but can only be selected if players have selected the Miner profession at level 5.
