Summary
It is no secret that DC Comics has had a bit of a rough couple of years. Not only has the DCEU fallen immensely at the box office, but the gaming side of things has not been much better. While some fans may have loved DC’s latest outings, the critical reception of bothGotham KnightsandSuicide Squad: Kill the JusticeLeaguehas told quite a different story. And because of that, Monolith’s upcomingWonder Womantitle may be in a bit of a tough spot.
Not much is known about Monolith’sWonder Womanoutside a quick reveal teaser, but now thatSuicide Squad: Kill the Justice Leaguehas hit store shelves, all eyes are on Diana’s solo game to see if it can deliver. The studio has shown it is capable of making some fantastic IP-based games as seen throughMiddle-earth: Shadow of Mordor, so anticipation is high, but this game has the unenviable task of needing to win many players back after recent failings, which is easier said than done.
Monolith’s Wonder Woman is DC’s Chance to Prove Itself
After the success of the MCU, it only made sense for Warner Bros. to go after a similar cinematic universe with DC Comics. So, the DCEU was born withthe release ofMan of Steelback in 2013. What started pretty promising quickly fell apart critically and financially, with most films struggling to make a profit since 2018’sAquaman. While there may have been some solid projects within, the series came to an unceremonious end with its four final films releasing in 2024.
DC"s issues were not just relegated to the film industry, as its recent video games have also been struggling. BothGotham KnightsandSuicide Squad: Kill the Justice Leaguefailed to deliver what fans wanted from their respective studios. Not only did many find faults with the stories being told, but both games were also bogged down by controversial mechanics. Additionally,Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice Leaguewas supposed to bethe triumphant return of theBatman: Arkhamseries, but instead, it was a live-service third-person shooter that ended up underperforming. There is still a chance Rocksteady is able to redeem itself, but the ship may have already sailed on this particular title.
Wonder Woman Will Need to Right the Ship on the Gaming Side
As Warner Bros. prepares to win audiences back with James Gunn’sSuperman: Legacy, there is also a ton of pressure on Monolith’sWonder Womanto do the same forthe gaming side of DC Comics. The brand has had a lackluster couple of years, which has likely put a stain on its characters for many. IfWonder Womandoes not deliver, then it could very well be the final nail in the coffin for non-Batman titles for a while. But if it is able to succeed, then it has the chance to change things for the better.
ThisWonder Womangameneeds to be a fantastic adventure if it wants any chance at changing the narrative around DC Comics projects. The story must be top-notch, the gameplay has to be exciting, and players should never want to leave its world. If it is able to tick all of those boxes, then it could be exactly what the studio needs right now. And if James Gunn’s plans actually come to fruition, then it might be one of the last standalone DC games, so it needs to end this era with a bang.
There is practically no information aboutWonder Womanright now, so it is difficult to predict if the game will be good or not. Based on Monolith’s past projects, there is a good chance it will be worth a shot. However, Rocksteady also had a strong reputation, andSuicide Squad: Kill the Justice Leagueended up disappointing a lot of its fans. So, even with the studio’s acclaimed catalog, no one really knows what to expect, though hopefully that will change soon.
