Five years afterSuper Mario Odyssey’s release, fans may be interested in finding new ways to play the game, and a new mod that adds the FLUDD device fromSuper Mario Sunshineto the equation does just that. One of the reasonsMario Odysseyhas been so widely acclaimedis the versatility of Mario’s moveset and sheer potential for engaging platforming it provides, but as this mod proves, there’s room for some of Mario’s more classic gimmicks as well.
Released for the Nintendo GameCube in 2002, Super Mario Sunshine is a bit of an unusual entry among Mario’s mainline platformers. The game has an overall tropical theme, the main objective revolves around cleaning up weird sludge, and Mario wears a robotic water-shooting backpack throughout the adventure. This backpack, theFlash Liquidizer Ultra Dousing Device or FLUDD, serves as Mario’s companion in a way similar to Cappy inMario Odyssey, and like Cappy, it provides a number of abilities unique to Sunshine, as its different nozzles allow players to fly for a limited time, jump super high, or dash at high speeds.

Now those abilities have been brought toSuper Mario Odysseycourtesy of JustKant, who released their FLUDD mod earlier this month. Those interested in downloading it can find the necessary information in the YouTube video below.
The mod does exactly what one might expect, strapping FLUDD to Mario’s back once more and providing access to its Hover Nozzle, Rocket Nozzle, and Turbo Nozzle. Fans may be disappointed to see FLUDD’s default Squirt Nozzle missing from thisSuper Mario Odysseymod, but that’s understandable considering its relative lack of mobility options compared to the other three.
While the water effects look a little rough around the edges, judging from the trailer, as far as gameplay goes, it looks like FLUDD works pretty much identically to how it did back inSuper Mario Sunshine. Players can hover through the air, dash across water, launch themselves up to high ledges, and everything else they could do back in the GameCube days, which, combined with the moves already available to them inOdyssey, will let them break levels in exciting new ways. Of course, players will have to be careful not to run out of water in the process.
The FLUDD mod forSuper Mario Odysseybrings two different eras of 3D Mario together and should enable fans to get plenty of extra mileage out of the game. Not only that, but being able to play with FLUDD again will surely have at least some players feeling nostalgic andhoping for a sequel toSuper Mario Sunshine. Granted, the odds of Sunshine 2 happening at this point are probably low, but still, fans can dream, and at least now they have a bit of Sunshine to enjoy inMario Odyssey.
