Sony made a big when they made their own console and it was a gambit that paid off with the PlayStation. They are their own company for sure but Sony is definitely still watching Nintendo like a hawk and is not afraid to chase trends. A recent example would be the PlayStation Portal which is like a stream-only version of the Switch.
What will they copy next? A PlayStation theme park? While that would be cool for fans, a lot would probably rather go into the games themselves in a sort of Isekai-like situation. Some game worlds likeRatchet and Clank’scould be fun but then others would be disastrous.
The reboot ofGod of Waropened up that version of Earth to many questions. If both Greek and Norse gods exist then are there others? Is Jesus out there somewhere relaxing with Buddha like inSouth Parkepisodes? To live in a world where all religions, or at least many, are true sounds like a nightmare.
That’s because many religions or belief system depict their gods as cruel or at least complicated as shown in the Norse and Greek pantheon in theGod of Warseries. Most of these characters are based on classic descriptions too, so it’s not like the team at Sony Santa Monica is completely making things up either. Never meet your heroes, as they say as Jesus or Buddha could be incredibly flawed.
There are just as many flaws with the Earth in theHorizonseries as there are with God of War’s version of Earth. The apocalypse happened and all of humanity was either wiped out or driven underground by a horde of robots that turned into dinosaurs or other strange creatures. The loss of human lives is tragic, but more so than that it was the loss of knowledge that truly doomed humanity.
It’s almost as if the apocalypse was like a hard reboot wherein humanity had to start from the ground up like a bunch of cavemen. Does that sound like a fun world to live in? There are benefits such as being able toride on top of dinosaur robotsbut that’s only if players can avoid dying from their jaws first.
The Last of Usis a celebrated game on PlayStation consoles along with an award-winning TV show. It’s a good drama but that doesn’t mean the Earth depicted in it is fun. It’s quite the opposite. The fungal infection destroyed the world, turning humans against humans in a seemingly never-ending brutal war of survival.
Besides humans, there are the fungal zombies, the Clickers, to look out for as well. Presumably, there must be somewhere nice to live in this version of Earth but finding it seems near impossible. Maybe one day the series will explore such a paradise but for now, this tour guide says stay away fromThe Last of Us.
Mister Mosquito is indeed part of the PlayStation family of exclusives including a Japan-only sequel. The story follows a bizarre-looking mosquito trying to earn some blood via the Yamada family. They’re just trying to live their lives and this titular bug keeps pestering them. Admittedly, the gameplay is fun as it is a cross between a stealth game and something akin to Shadow of the Colossus.
While it may be fun to play, it doesn’t seem like an ideal version of Earth. Normal-sized mosquitos in the summertime are bad enough. Having to deal with sentient mosquitoes that are as big asMister Mosquitowould be a nightmare. It wouldn’t be the worst Earth to live on, but it wouldn’t be pleasant either.
The PS3 had a lot of good new IP on it. Some went on to other consoles likeThe Last of Uswhile others, like theResistanceseries, were short-lived. The first game sets things up as aliens, called the Chimera, land on Earth duringWorld War 2. The fight shifts to fighting them, but Earth loses and Chimera has practically taken over everything as shown in the sequels.
As the name suggests, there is a resistance of fighters trying to take Earth back but it is not a pretty war. The existence of aliens is cool in this world, but it’s not great that they want to kill humanity. Also, after the events of the third main game, it remains unclear what the fate of humanity is. Even if the Chimera were defeated, there would need to be a lot of rebuilding. There are far better space-faring games in Insomniac’s catalog worth exploring.
Until Dawn’sEarthfollows some similar scary logic to theResistanceseries. This horror game follows a group of young adults chilling in a vacation shack when they start disappearing one by one. There are two twists in the game. One, most of these kidnappings are perpetrated by someone within the group, posing as a murderer. Two, after that mystery is solved another begins through the supernatural existence of Wendigo.
They are not a prank and are indeed real. Wendigo have various origins and takes in pop culture, but they are by and large flesh eaters with ape-like and deer-like features. If Wendigo exist inUntil Dawn’sversion of Earth then do other cryptozoology creatures like Nessie and Big Foot? Are they just as terrifying to encounter in the wild? If so then no thank you.
