HBOhas revealed the official plot synopsis and title card for the fourth season ofTrue Detective.The next season of the award-winning anthology series will be titledTrue Detective: Night Countryand is set to star actress Jodie Foster and professional boxer Kali Reis.

Issa López (Tigers Are Not Afraid) will serve as showrunner, director, writer, and executive producer. Foster is an oscar-winning actress known for her roles in critically acclaimed films such asSilence of the LambsandTaxi Driver. Reis is a world champion professional boxer and indie movie actress who is known for starring in the IFC filmCatch The Fair One.The film premiered at the Tribeca film festival last year and was met with critical acclaim, earning Reis a nomination for Best Female Lead at the Independent Spirit Awards.

“We are tremendously excited to return to theTrue Detectivefranchiseand to be working with the multi-talented Issa López, whose singular vision for herNight Countryinstallment will be beautifully realized with Jodie Foster and Kali Reis in the starring roles,” said Francesca Orsi, Executive Vice President of HBO Programming. “When the long winter night falls in Ennis, Alaska, the six men that operate the Tsalal Arctic Research Station vanish without a trace," reads the official synopsis. “To solve the case, Detectives Liz Danvers (Foster) and Evangeline Navarro (Reis) will have to confront the darkness they carry in themselves, and dig into the haunted truths that lie buried under the eternal ice.”

Created by author Nic Pizzolatto, the first season ofTrue Detectivestarred Matthew McConaugheyand Woody Harrelson as two Louisiana police detectives who become involved in a decades-long investigation surrounding a disturbing serial killer. The first season received high acclaim, particularly for its performances and engaging plot, and the series was renewed for a second season starring Colin Farrell, Rachel McAdams, Vince Vaughn, and Taylor Kitsch. While the second season received mixed reviews, the series was eventually renewed for a third season after a brief hiatus and saw Academy award-winning actor Mahershala Ali in the lead role.

This is the first season to receive a subtitle and the first to be headlined by a different writer. Pizzolatto, who wrote the first three seasons, was initially set to pursue a new series at FX titledRedeemer, which would have seen him reunite with McConaughey. The series was canceled before it went into production and last year it was reported that Pizzolatto was looking to get out of his deal with the network. Pizzolatto will serve as an executive producer onTrue Detective: Night Countryalong with Foster, McConaughey, Harrelson,filmmaker Barry Jenkins, Adele Romanski, Mark Ceryak, Alan Page Arriaga, Mari Jo Winkler, andTrue Detectiveseason one director Cary Joji Fukunaga.
