A Respawn Entertainment listing recently revealed something interesting forApex Legendsfans. It would seem that asingle-playerApex Legendsgame is in development, with the listing specifying the Apex Universe. This terminology has not really been used at large before, and many fans were quick to catch on to this.

Many hope that it means anewTitanfallgame is in the works, although this is incredibly unlikely, while the pendulum also quickly swept the other way. SomeTitanfallfans were upset that it didn’t sayTitanfalluniverse. This is important because, back when Apex Legends leaked ahead of its surprise launch, it was coined as a battle royale game set in theTitanfalluniverse. This doesn’t backtrack that, but it does change it significantly.

The New Apex Universe

Apex LegendsandTitanfallshare a universe—they always have and always will. It’s sometimes more subtle and sometimes more blatant.Apex Legendstakes place 30 years afterTitanfall, includes the Apex Predators from the latter, shares several weapons, and some legends, like Valkyrie, have backgrounds defined byTitanfalllore.Apex Legendswas conceived as a battle royale title set inTitanfall’s Universe, and while those two markers will always be shared,Apex Legendsis a huge success for Respawn and EA.

To change the terminology based on that idea is not surprising; it doesn’t nullify theTitanfalluniverse either. It’s just using the more prevalent term. As much as fans dislike it,Titanfall 3doesn’t seem like it’s ever going to happen.Titanfallwill always be part of Respawn, butTitanfall’s future is as murky as they come in the game world. Meanwhile,Apex Legends is reportedly getting a single-player game likely more tied to these events thanTitanfall, andApex Legends Mobileis entering season 2.

That’s not even discussing all the possibilities with the base game, and perhaps other projects that Respawn and EA are invested in.Titanfallfans being upset by this change is understandable, but it is not malicious. It’s just the right plan for the universe’s future. IfApex Legendscontinues to do well and that universe grows as it has, that’s the best bet forTitanfall’s future. It has changed, of course, but the DNA is still there.

Apex Legendsis available now for Mobile, PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
