TheLegend of Zeldais one of a few iconic video games that has managed to withstand the almighty test of time. The franchise is over 30 years old and still going strong. In fact,Breath of the Wildwas hailed one of the best releases so far and fans are anxiously awaiting the sequel with bated breath. It’s incredible to think such an expansive and beautifully designed game came from such humble origins, but even the originalLegend of Zeldahad its own unique charm.

But the retro games can be a bit “dated” in comparison, and each year we travel even farther from the series' origins. It’s alarming to realize that each “generation” has its ownLegend of Zeldatitle that they grew up with. Older players got their start withThe Legend of Zelda,Zelda II: The Adventures of Link, andThe Legend of Zelda: A Link To The Past. These three juggernauts are considered “retro” by current standards.

10Everyone Hates Moldorm
Anyone who’s an avid fan of the Legend of Zelda series likely has a handful of bosses that they despised fighting. Whether you believe that the retro bosses were harder or the new-age 3D baddies offer more of a challenge, we can all agree that there seems to be at least one boss per title that can be a hassle. When it comes to The Legend of Zelda: A Link To The Past, one name strikes fear into the hearts of players: Moldorm. This annoying worm boss features a small weak spot located on the end of his tail and the arena in which you fight him in guarantees you’re going to fall through the floor (and start all over) at least once.
9Release The Cuccos!
This particular comic can apply to pretty much everyLegend of Zeldatitle under the sun. There is something dastardly about those adorable little cuccos that roam happily around fields and towns.

The seemingly innocent fowl will cluck and flee if you accidentally strike them once with your sword. Just be sure you don’t hit them a few times or you’ll find yourself adrift in a sea of unforgiving feathers. They really are the strongest “foes” in all of Hyrule.
8Always Double Check
In classic Legend of Zelda fashion, A Link to the Past features an array of simple puzzles that must be solved in order to progress through some areas or dungeons. One of these puzzles comes in the form of pullable levers. Sometimes you’ll come across multiple levers with only one being the “correct answer.”

Even getting the answer right the first try doesn’t stop some of us from obsessively pulling at the incorrect lever. We’ll admit we do this in every game that features mechanics like this.
7Where Do Rupees Even Come From?
It’s a well-known fact that rupees are overflowing from Monsters, Grass Patches, and Pots throughout the land of Hyrule. It makes sense to find a little cash on a mob you just defeated, or to find a few rupees in a piggy-bank-like pot, but why exactly are so many strewn throughout the grass?

Does everyone in Hyrule have holes in their pockets? Do rupees grow like plants? There are definitely more of these shiny baubles hiding in the weeds than there should be.
6NES Zelda Hardmode
Those of us that first booted up The Legend of Zeldaon NES when we were younger were met with a truly difficult adventure filled to the brim with traps, enemies, and “difficult puzzles.” Revisiting the title as an adult makes the adventure a bit easier but there is no denying that the retro games can be pretty challenging in spots. Even so, there are those out there that want to spike the difficulty to the next level, going on crazy “runs” in which they limit their items and upgrades. If you want to consider yourself a real retroZeldamaster, try something along these lines.
5All Those Broken Pots
Of all the things that Link will collect on his journey, rupees are possibly the most important. In the older releases, they were used to purchase necessary items and potions. As time went on, pots and tall patches of grass became a mainstay in the series, forcing Link to vandalize property to covet the useful gems.

Thankfully, most of the residents and pottery owners don’t seem to mind Link’s destructive behavior because the game would be a lot more difficult if we had to pay for and replace all the broken property.
4Try Not To Think About It
The Legend of Zeldaseries entered a darker place with the release ofThe Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Maskbut the series has always been a bit on the dark side if you think about it. Some of the creatures Link encounters, paired with the locations he’s forced to travel through.

Then you’ve got some of the mechanics that can be a bit questionable. Just where do those extra hearts come from when Link collects enough pieces or defeats a boss? Maybe it’s best not to think about it.
3Lost In Adventure
The originalLegend of Zeldawas fairly lengthy in terms of gameplay but the inability to “save your progress” meant beating the game in one sitting or leaving your console on while you tended to other things. That is, unless you knew the nifty “save via a second controller” trick. For those of us that didn’t, we were forced to stay up until the wee hours of the morning, trying our best to power through each dungeon and reach Ganon.
2Zelda II Is Brutal
When it comes to difficult NES games, many people gravitate towards titles likeBattletoads,Contra, andSilver Surfer, butZelda II: The Adventure of Linkis every bit as frustrating and controller-breaking. The mixture of a top-down overworld and side-scrolling dungeons and enemy encounters was jarring for many and the combat difficulty was amped up quite a bit for the “sequel.” Don’t even get us started on the pain that is Death Mountain.
This meme is spot on. Whether you’re just starting out or revisiting this title,Zelda IIis one of the hardest games ever.
1Pretty Accurate
Zelda II: The Adventure of Linkis a lot different than its predecessor but it does offer up a few iconic mechanics and enemies that we would see in later titles. Perhaps the most well-known addition was Link’s Shadow or “Dark Link,” a manifestation of our hero that features all of the same moves and abilities. He was ridiculously difficult to beat in Zelda II (unless you used the cheesy method).
Perhaps most alarming is how similar Link looks to Peter Pan in this tile, with his iconic green outfit and new “dastardly” shadow.
