Looks like Robert Rodriguez is getting ambitious beyond the scope ofThe Book of Boba Fett. While the show itself is still captivating audiences, its director and producer has something new in mind for the future: AZorroseries.
Rodriguez, whose career has spanned fromThe Book of Boba FettandThe Mandalorianto the addictively wackySpy Kidsfilms, has a new project up his sleeve for the near future. With his eyes focused onThe CW, he’ll be bringing a new re-imagining of the classicZorrotale to the network of teenage angst and superhero smolder. But unlike other takes on the suave renegade, this new series will break convention and see the story retold with a female lead.

According to Deadline, Rodriguez and his sister Rebecca Rodriguez (Doom Patrol,theSnowpiercerseries) will serve as writers for the show while Rebecca will direct. The story involves a young Latine woman who joins a secret society in her quest for vengeance against the person who murdered her father. In the process, she ends up taking on the name of Zorro and becoming a legendary outlaw.
This project has actually been in the works for several years now, with the previous iteration still involving the Rodriguez siblings. Originally, the drama series was set to air on NBC and involvedModern Family’s Sofia Vergara as executive producer, though she is no longer working on the series. That version of the story took a more modern spin onZorro, centering the new show on a young underground artist named Sola Dominguez. But now, it looks like they may be starting from scratchwith the CW series.
It’s unclear whether the new series will follow the same character with a similar setting or if the time frame will be much more in line with the originalZorrostory. While Vergara is no longer involved, the production has brought in Sean Tretta, known for his work onMayans M.C., to join the writing team. Revenge is a pretty popular story to tell, and it’s rife with opportunities for great character development. So hopefully things turn out well in this case.
The newZorroseries will be the latest in The CW’s ever-growing repertoire of action and drama shows, but it will be nice to see one that isn’t a DC property for once. The story ofZorrois just over a century old at this point, so it’s high time somebody took a fresh new stab at it. No, that weird top-heavy version wielded byMorgana fromPersona 5doesn’t count.
